How to use the feeling box

A simple 5 steps RULER approach to kick start the Small Human, Big Feelings © 2020 feeling box:

  1. Make this a bed time routine with your child and spend a few minutes on 1 feeling card each evening.
  2. Use the description on the card to explain to your child what the feeling means.
  3. Use your real life experience to describe an incident or situation where you felt that way. By doing so, you will help your child to Recognize, Understand and Label the feeling.
  4. Describe how you had expressed the feeling and also where you had to learnt to regulate them well. Being vulnerable and share any challenges you faced will also help the child to understand that it is a challenging task and that it is ok. This way, you will help your child to Express and Regulate their feelings.
  5. Now, take turn and ask your child when they experienced that feeling previously and how they coped with it. Speak genuinely to understand your child’s world and help them learn and explore their own world in this complex environment.
